The honest starting point

Peeling render, chalky walls and tired facades don't fix themselves

You know the look. Render that has hairline-cracked and lifted along the sunny wall. Weatherboards where the last coat has gone chalky and washes off on your hand. Eaves and fascias streaked with mould from years under the tree canopy. It creeps up slowly, then one day the whole place looks tired.

Most of that comes down to two things: preparation that was rushed, and coatings that were never right for a shaded, humid Lower North Shore block. A quick recoat over flaking paint buys you a season, maybe two. Then it lifts again.

We work the other way around. We read the surface first, sort the moisture and the failing areas, then match the system to the wall. Timber gets flexible coatings that move with it. Shaded, damp walls get treated for mould before a brush touches them. It is slower up front and it lasts far longer. That is the whole point.

We have painted homes across the Lower North Shore for over 20 years. Family homes, Federation and interwar houses, apartments and strata blocks, shopfronts and offices. Different jobs, same standard. We quote it honestly, fix the price, and turn up when we say we will.

What a proper repaint sorts out

  • Cracked, lifting render on the sun-hit walls
  • Chalking, faded weatherboard and trim
  • Mould and lichen on shaded, damp walls
  • Peeling eaves, fascias and window frames
  • Interiors that have yellowed or scuffed

Bobby did an absolutely fantastic job painting the gutters, fascia and eaves of my home. His attention to detail was top-notch, from the thorough sanding to the careful application of primer and weather-resistant coats. He even coordinated with my neighbours so both sides of our semi-detached house match perfectly. Highly professional, trustworthy and a beautiful finish.

Got four quotes and chose Bobby based on depth of knowledge, and it absolutely paid off. He exceeded expectations and over delivered at every stage. Outstanding workmanship and real commitment to excellence. Highly recommend. I will be a repeat customer.

Absolutely fantastic experience. The price was very reasonable for the quality of work delivered, and the attention to detail was exceptional throughout. The job was completed incredibly quickly without compromising on finish. Everything looks flawless. I would definitely use them again.

Where we are genuinely different

Three things we do that most painters skip

Heritage and character homes

Federation, interwar and character work

The Lower North Shore is full of Federation houses, California bungalows and interwar brick. That means detailed timber prep, careful trim and fascia restoration, and colours that suit the original architecture rather than fighting it. Where a home sits in a heritage conservation area, we work to the finishes and palettes those controls call for.

Premium residential finishes

Renovated homes and architect-designed builds

Renovated family homes, extensions and architect-designed additions need a refined finish and a painter who coordinates cleanly with builders and designers. We scope the whole job so the finish stays consistent from the original front rooms through to the new addition out the back. No mismatch at the join.

Every property type

Apartments, strata, brick, render and shopfronts

Not every job is a house. We paint apartments and townhouses, strata blocks and common areas, brick and rendered exteriors, and commercial premises near Chatswood and the local shopping strips. Different access, different scheduling, same finish standard on the wall.

Suburb by suburb

Painting across the Lower North Shore, suburb by suburb

Every pocket paints a little differently. Here is what we see in each suburb we cover, and how we handle it.

Painters in Chatswood2067

CBD, strata and character streets

The problemChatswood mixes a dense commercial core of high-rise apartments and strata around the CBD with older single-storey character streets in South Chatswood. Strata repaints and shopfronts need access, scheduling and low disruption. Character homes need the opposite: patient prep and period-correct colours.

How we fix itFor strata and commercial work we coordinate access and trading hours and keep the site clean and safe. For the older streets we prep timber and render properly and match schemes that suit the era. Two very different jobs, handled by the same team.

Painters in Artarmon2064

Heritage and industrial precinct

The problemArtarmon is two suburbs in one. East of the railway sits a conservation area of intact Federation and California bungalow homes where the exterior detail matters. South of the freeway is a busy light-industrial and studio precinct where floors and facades cop hard wear.

How we fix itOn the heritage streets we restore trims, fascias and window detail and choose colours that respect the streetscape. On the commercial and factory side we handle durable exterior coatings and epoxy floors that stand up to traffic.

Painters in Castlecrag2068

Griffin Conservation Area

The problemCastlecrag is unlike anywhere else on the Lower North Shore. Much of it sits within the Griffin Conservation Area, where heritage controls guide form, materials and how buildings sit into the landscape. Get the palette or finish wrong and it jars with the whole streetscape.

How we fix itWe paint to heritage-sympathetic colour schemes, favour natural and stone-toned finishes where they suit, and work within the conservation controls that apply. Careful, considered work for homes that were designed to sit quietly in the bush.

Painters in Northbridge2063

Waterfront and bridge-side homes

The problemNorthbridge is waterfront and bridge-side family homes, plenty of them rendered or weatherboard, many shaded and exposed to the weather that rolls off Middle Harbour. Damp and salt air are hard on an older coat.

How we fix itWe wash down, treat any growth and use exterior systems built for moisture and movement. Weatherboard and render both get the prep they need so the finish holds rather than lifting after a season.

Painters in Naremburn2065

Federation cottages and terraces

The problemNaremburn is compact: Federation cottages, laneway-access terraces and mid-rise apartments packed into tight streets. Access is often narrow and neighbours are close, so a messy, drawn-out job is a real headache here.

How we fix itWe plan access and set-up carefully, protect shared boundaries, and keep the job tidy and moving. Interior and exterior repaints done with respect for the tight streetscape and the people next door.

Painters in Castle Cove2069

Quiet waterfront pocket

The problemCastle Cove is a quiet waterfront pocket. Homes here take moisture off the water and sun on the open faces, and weatherboard and rendered exteriors are the ones that show wear first.

How we fix itWe use moisture-aware coatings suited to a waterside setting, prep the timber and render thoroughly, and finish in schemes that suit the leafy, low-key streets.

Straight answers

Lower North Shore painting questions, answered

Most homes here only get repainted once a decade, so it pays to get the details right. These are the questions we hear most.

How long does exterior paint last on a Lower North Shore home?
With proper preparation and the right system, a quality exterior repaint on render or brick typically lasts around 8 to 12 years, and weatherboard often needs attention a little sooner because timber moves. Shaded, damp walls under heavy tree cover tend to be the first to show wear. The single biggest factor is prep, not the paint on the tin.
My shaded, tree-covered walls grow mould. Can you treat that before painting?
Yes. Damp, south-facing and tree-shaded walls hold moisture and grow mould and lichen, and that is usually where an old coat fails first. We wash the surface down, treat the growth, then use the right primers and exterior systems so it does not bleed straight back through the new coat. Painting over mould without treating it never lasts.
What preparation do you do before painting?
Prep is where a job is won or lost. We cut back and remove failing paint, fill and sand, treat any mould, prime bare timber and patch repairs, and clear leaf litter and debris from roofs, gutters and eaves rather than painting over them. Only then do we start coating. It is the slow part, and it is the part that makes the finish last.
When is the best time of year to paint exteriors in Sydney's humidity?
Autumn and spring are ideal, with mild temperatures and lower humidity. Summer is workable but we plan around heat and afternoon storms, and we avoid coating surfaces that are damp or in direct harsh sun. Paint needs the right conditions to cure properly, so we schedule exterior work to give it the best shot.
What causes paint to peel or chalk, and how do you prevent it?
Peeling usually comes from moisture behind the coat or poor adhesion over a surface that was not prepped. Chalking is the coating breaking down under UV. We prevent both by fixing the moisture source, preparing the surface properly, priming where needed, and using quality systems suited to the wall. Skip those steps and the finish lifts within a season or two.
Do you paint heritage and conservation-area homes?
Yes. The Lower North Shore has many Federation and interwar homes, and areas like the Griffin Conservation Area in Castlecrag carry controls that guide exterior colours, finishes and materials. We work to those controls and use systems suited to original timber, brick and rendered surfaces. We will not fabricate an approval you do not hold, but we will help you paint within the rules that apply.
How long will my repaint take?
It depends on the size of the home and the condition of the surfaces. A single-room interior might be a day or two, a full interior a week or so, and a full exterior repaint longer again once prep is factored in. We give you a realistic timeframe with your fixed-price quote, not a number pulled out of the air.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Sydney Paintmasters holds Painter Decorator Licence 315254C and carries full insurance. You can ask to see both before work starts. A licensed, insured painter protects your home and any workmanship cover on the job.
Do you move furniture and protect floors?
Yes. We cover and protect floors, fixtures and furniture before a brush is lifted, and we move what needs moving so we can work safely around it. We keep the site tidy each day and clean up properly at the end. Your home should not feel like a building site the whole time.
What paint and systems do you use?
We use premium interior and exterior systems matched to each surface, timber, render, brick, roof or floor, rather than one product for everything. Timber gets flexible coatings, shaded exteriors get mould-resistant systems, and floors get hard-wearing epoxy. We are happy to confirm the exact products and any accreditation on your quote.
Can you paint weatherboard, render and brick?
Yes, all three, and each is handled differently. Weatherboard needs flexible coatings and careful timber prep because it moves with the seasons. Render needs cracks cut out and filled first. Brick needs the right primer for adhesion. Treating them all the same is how finishes fail early.
Do you do strata and commercial painting?
Yes. We paint strata common areas, stairwells and full block exteriors, plus shopfronts, offices and commercial premises. This work is as much about access, scheduling and low disruption as it is about the finish, and we plan for that around residents and trading hours.
Is the quote really fixed, with no call-out fee?
Yes. Quotes are free, there is no call-out fee, and the price we agree in writing is the price you pay. If something was missed in the estimate, that is on us, not a surprise on your final invoice.
What suburbs do you cover?
We paint across the Lower North Shore, including Willoughby, Chatswood, Artarmon, Castlecrag, Northbridge, Naremburn, Castle Cove and Middle Cove. If you are just outside that list, call 0423 019 087 and ask, we cover the surrounding area too.
